Riders turn out for Bass Coast’s BEST cycle challenge

Hundreds of bike riders turned out with their determination and smiles aplenty for the annual Bass Coast Cycle Challenge, held on Saturday 11 November.

Starting and finishing in Inverloch, cyclists of all ages and abilities, on all bike types, took to the start line, and challenged themselves over one of five incredible routes: 121km, 85km, 53km, 40km and the inaugural 100km gravel ride.

“On top of our four cornerstone rides, the new gravel route was an absolute hit with the riders.” Said event founder and director Gavin Slavin.

“We were blown away by the response to the gravel ride, and heard from many riders that it was challenging, but very rewarding. We look forward to growing this event more next year.”

Australian champion cyclists, Robert Crowe (OAM) and Jamie Kelly rode the 100km gravel ride. Jamie on his recumbent tricycle, with Crowe alongside as chaperone rider.

“This was the best Jamie has ever ridden, he went up Mt. Misery in second gear, it was a great event, a great course and the dirt up Mt Misery is awesome.” Said Crowe.

Riders experienced the full range of Victorian weather – from sun, to wind, to rain, to lightning in the distance, to sun again, presenting an added layer of challenge.

First rider across the line Andrew Westaway, who rode the 121km cornerstone route, commented “I loved it, it was a tough course, no wonder this part of the world produces such good cyclists.”

Fellow 121km rider, Laurie Barresi agreed: “When the wind came, it was one of the toughest conditions I have ridden in. The organisation, atmosphere, town centre, accommodation, restaurants, cafes, and the  amazing scenery, all compensated for the high wind! I absolutely loved the whole challenge. And we will be back next year.”

Proceeds from the BCCC fund in-school courses teaching life-saving road and driver knowledge. Over the past 10+ years, the BCCC has enabled over 3000 secondary school students, from the South Gippsland and Bass Coast areas, to take part in the RYDA Road Safety Education, where they learn knowledge and skills which they will retain for life.

The Bass Coast Cycle Challenge is a true community event, and could not be possible without the support of many key people and groups, incredible volunteers, sponsors, local businesses.

The 2024 Bass Coast Cycle Challenge will be held on Saturday 9 November 2024, with more details to be found soon at www.basscoastcyclechallenge.com
