“Young people are over-represented in road deaths… so we decided to run the RYDA program.”

The following story is from Antonio, year 12 coordinator at Bass Coast College.

The RYDA team presented their highly rewarding and sometimes confronting program on driver education, to the cohort of 160 Year 12 students.

Young people continue to be over represented in road deaths and serious injuries, which is why we decided now was the perfect time to run the only national road safety education program for youth in Australia.

So what are some of the topics covered during the six sessions students participated in?

  • Making conscious choices.

  • Understanding the dangers on the road.

  • Understanding the importance of car safety.

  • Learning how to communicate driving-related concerns with friends, or with people they choose to share a car with.

  • Learning about speed and estimating breaking speeds when driving at 40, 50, 60 and 80 km/hr.

As I circulated through the groups, it was obvious that presenters were doing a wonderful job of engaging our young people with short, sharp video clips, statistics, and scenarios. As well as years of experience dealing with the effects of road trauma. Students were given many opportunities to share their ideas, take a breather if some of the content was too close to home, and to be in a better position of being informed and in control of their driving experience.

As we move closer to the summer holiday period, the timing could not be any better to run the program.

I’d like to thank John and Anton and the whole RYDA team for their work with our students, the Year 12 cohort for their contribution, and all teachers involved with supervising sessions.

Antonio Castello

Year 12 Coordinator.
